Abstracts featuring animal subjects have their own singular appeal for collectors and art lovers alike. Much like nature abstraction, the options are endless: some artists prefer painting animals with a degree of personification, reflecting human attributes, often with symbolic intention. Others simply caricature or distort what would otherwise be a realistic reproduction of an animal’s form and behavior.
Animal abstracts tend to be abundantly colorful, often with paradoxical tones to create classic animal patterns (spots, stripes and mottled fur). Popularly featured animals include wild cats, especially lions and leopards, whose distinct features are highlighted with the use of jeweled hues and impeccable attention to detail. Birds are featured in a number of abstract pieces, which often reflect the freedom and grace of a bird in flight. Aviary abstracts achieve their compelling beauty by exaggerating the effect of feathers and plumage with contrast and shadow work. Similarly, the fluidity and serenity of fish is commonly painted, and marine life has also inspired a number of surrealist pieces.
Whatever the animal being featured, abstracts aim to capture the essence of its unique beauty, a perfect example of artistic storytelling.
