Landscape abstracts invite viewers to view sceneries and vistas which may either be wholly conjured by the artist’s own imagination, or inspired by existing imagery and blended with their own artistic vision. Perhaps the most notable contribution to this form of art came when the concept of plein air painting was popularized, which transported artists from their studios to the very surroundings they would paint. This allowed for a more interactive, sensual experience, which certainly reflected in the artwork.

These pieces allow us to appreciate beautifully the emotions and thoughts of the artists creating them, and give viewers an insight into how the artist interacts with the world around them. At their core, landscape abstracts are immensely personal and subjective, and allow viewers to appreciate every layer of the piece. The nature of abstract art means that each viewer may be seeing a different image, as the art sometimes bears little resemblance to realistic landscapes.

This form of abstract art is incredibly versatile, and artists have depicted various different landforms, terrains and topographies in their work. By exaggerating landforms, employing unorthodox color choice and intertwining elements of nature with imagined, conceptual imagery, artists manage to create artwork which is truly striking.
